Song of the Week - “Coffee Girl” by The Tragically Hip.

Tragically Hip are Canada’s favorite sons. Lead singer Gordon Downies instantly recognizable voice always takes me back to my time living in Vancouver.

From the Canadian Audiophile blog,

If ever there was a band to sum up the Canadian character, it would be Kingston’s The Tragically Hip. From the sun-yellowed prairies of Saskatchewan to the heavin’ metropolis of Toronto, from the rain-soaked lanes of Vancouver to the warmth of Nova Scotia, The Hip have criss-crossed Canada with their tales of love, struggle, passion, glory, and hockey.

The quintet has poetically told the stories of thousands, keenly engaging in the beautiful accounts of the fisherman, the longshoreman, the waitress, the businesswoman, the lawmaker, the hockey player, the truck driver, the farmer.

And now, with the world to all appearances crumbling ‘round us, frontman Gordon Downie and the band return to draw us near, hold us close, and open our eyes.

The Hip have dispatched Bob Rock again to serve as producer. His work on 2006’s World Container helped shake something loose and it’s exciting to see the band continue on the same path with their eleventh, the aptly-titled We Are the Same.

“Coffee Girl” is a catchy tune that avoids the angst and tension common to much of Tragically Hip’s offerings.

Avett Brothers have always been kind of hit or miss for me. Past albums typically had a song or two I LOVED and the rest, well, not so much. Just got their new album I and Love and You after a nudge from my buddy Chad. Most definitely love or really really like the majority of tunes on this one.

My Flavor

I can not design a website. I can sketch the layout on paper, showing where I want this, and where I want that, but I can not make it happen. I know all about html and css but just do not have the time or inclination to master it. I have Dreamweaver, but do not have the time or inclination to master it. I have iWeb, but find it clunky. This should be simple.

Therefore, I am left to the mercy of blog and website templates. Unfortunately, to customize these, I again end up under the hood screwing with (up) the code.

I want something easy, simple, and intuitive to help me lay out my “Homepage” and I may have found it. Or at least the best fit yet. It’s called flavors.me and Andy Welfle turned me on to it. Then @jackzerby from flavors.me hooked me up with a beta invite.

First off, it literally took me 15 minutes to set up this “portal” to many of my other online presences. The design/layout is clean and not fussy. The dashboard makes it all easy to set up. Here is a screen cap of the main page…

The cool thing about Flavors is that the “services” I add on the site open up directly on the main page, like this one for my Twitter feed…

and this one for my Tumblr feed…

At the bottom of the feed is the link to click-thru directly to my Tumblr page.

Simple, right?

Here is a video link with a better description of what Flavor.me does.

Flavors asked for input so here is my 2 cents :

1) Ability to use any font on my computer

2) Drop shadow for “about” box and “feed” box

3) More available services in addition to Twitter, Last.fm, Tumblr, Vimeo, Flickr, and Facebook. Perhaps Linked In, 8 Tracks, Blogger, Wordpress, etc.

Now I know some will claim that it is too limited. It doesn’t have enough functionality.

That is exactly what I like about it. That is what I need and have been looking for.

So go get your invite and see how easy it is.

I found this little beauty at a garage sale this weekend for 4 bucks.

It is a Casio VL-Tone VL-5.

Of course I plugged it into my computer and proceeded to start noodling.

The simplicity was inspiring and an hour later I recorded the song above.

(The first 58 bars are simply the VL-5 recorded straight into Ableton Live. No effects. At measure 59 the bass line is the VL-5 pitch shifted down an octave. More effects are added at bar 83)

Karen O and the Kids - All Is Love

This is from the soundtrack to Where the Wild Things Are coming to theaters on October 16.

Karen O composed music for the soundtrack and co-produced it with Tom Biller of the Afternoons. And Rolling Stone has also learned the list of Kids’ rockers includes her YYYs bandmates Brian Chase and Nick Zinner along with Tristan Bechet (Services), Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Oscar Michel (Gris Gris), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska). An untrained children’s choir contributes to the songs and soundscapes.

Infectious and joyful!!!!! Cant wait to see the movie.
